Central Road Research Institute

CSIR-Central Road Research Institute (CRRI), a premier national laboratory established in 1952, a constituent of Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) is engaged in carrying out research and development projects on design, construction and maintenance of roads and runways, traffic and transportation planning of mega and medium cities, management of roads in different terrains, improvement of marginal materials, utilization of industrial waste in road construction, landslide control, ground improvements environmental pollution, road traffic safety and analysis & design, wind, fatigue, corrosion studies, performance monitoring/evaluation, service life assessment and rehabilitation of highway & railway bridges. The institute provides technical and consultancy services to various user organizations in India and abroad. For capacity building of human resources in the area of highway Engineering to undertake and execute roads and runway projects, Institute has the competence to organize National & International Training Programmes continuing education courses since 1962 to disseminate the R&D finding to the masses.

Research and Development Areas

  1. Bridge Engineering and Structures Division

  2. Geotechnical Engineering Division :- The division undertakes Sponsored research and Consultancy assignments in the area related to geotechnical investigations for highways; land slide investigations & hazard mitigation; ground improvement for soft and compressible soils; and characterization and utilization of various kinds of waste and marginal materials in road construction. The division has successfully completed a large number of difficult and challenging projects being sponsored by agencies like Central and State PWD’s, Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MORTH), National Highway Authority (NHAI), Border Roads Organizations (BRO), Department of Science and Technology, Central Public Works Department (CPWD), National Rural Infrastructure Agency (NRIDA) and several Public and Private sector organizations.

  3. Flexible Pavements Division :- Majority of Indian road network being of flexible pavements, the division acquires a significant position in meeting the demands of the industry for R&D capped associated activities. In this endeavour the division recognises its thrust area with design, construction, maintenance, failure investigations and serviceability management of roads of all categories and runways, in different topographical conditions and terrains. The division also involves in exploration of optimised usage of industrial and other wastes. One of the prime areas of activity is experimenting with technologies that are sustainable and environment friendly.

  4. Pavement Evaluation Division :- Systematic monitoring of pavement performance including structural and functional evaluation by using modern devices helps in achieving long lasting and better performing pavements and efficient management of road network within the given budget.

  5. Rigid Pavements Division

  6. Traffic Engineering and Safety Division :- Pioneer in developing traffic management system, Traffic Management Strategies for Urban Road Network and Highways, Road Safety Audit, Design of Transport Infrastructure, Imparting Knowledge to practicing Engineers, Transport Planners and Traffic Police in understanding the Traffic Management Options, Strategies, Measures and their applicability for Indian conditions.

  7. Transport Planning and Environment Division :- The Transportation Planning and Environment Division strives to develop new tools, methods, technologies and policies by doing cutting edge R & D and Consultancy projects in the areas of Comprehensive traffic and transportation studies, City Mobility Plans (CMP), Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) with real time traffic and weather information, etc. This division wishes to facilitate in imparting training and skill development among highways and transportation fellow professionals fraternity leading for an effective and efficient movement of people and goods, shaping of urban & rural forms, improving economic and environmental vitality and quality of life for all.
